Tree description

Tuyu Sankist is classified as a low tree. Its maximum height is 3 m, width is 150-180 cm. The crown has a conical shape and dense structure. Sprigs grow quite densely and are directed upwards.

The needles stand out from the rest of the cultures: it has a bright golden yellow glossy color that will not leave anyone indifferent.

Cones are small, rounded, light brown. The root system of the tree is not very branched and is located close to the surface.

Growing regions

Thuja western Sankist is highly resistant to cold. It is recommended for cultivation in the frost resistance zone 2b. This means that cultivation is possible throughout Russia, with the exception of the Tyumen, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk regions and Krasnoyarsk Territory.

For planting, it is important to choose a healthy and strong seedling. The roots of the plant should be light or pinkish, and not dark and dry. The thuja branch straightens right after compression in the palm of your hand, but if it remains wrinkled and hangs, this indicates a weakened state.

Seat selection

The plant loves good lighting, so it is better to plant it in a sunny place.

The tree can grow in partial shade, but with a strong shadow, the needles will grow not golden, but simply green.

The soil should be moist, fertile, loamy, without lime, with an acid reaction.

The landing hole should be one and a half times the size of the container, and reach 60-80 cm in depth. A drainage layer is laid at the bottom of the pit - soil with sand, pebbles or expanded clay.

The tree needs sunlight

Garden soil is mixed with peat (2: 1) and nitroammophoska or special fertilizers for conifers are added.

The plant is placed in a hole with an earthen lump. The root neck cannot be deepened - it should be located at ground level. The tuyka is abundantly watered (5-10 liters of water, depending on the size of the seedling), and the soil around the trunk is rammed. You can mulch the trunk circle with peat or sawdust.

This thuja is not too whimsical to care for, but for successful cultivation, you must follow some rules. The main measures include: regular watering and sprinkling of the crown, mulching and loosening the soil, fertilizing, pruning. In addition, the tree must be properly prepared for the winter.

You need to water the tree weekly, using from 5-6 to 10-12 liters of water (depending on the age of the arborvitae). In dry and hot times, frequent sprinkling is necessary - in the evenings. To reduce moisture evaporation, it is recommended to mulch the trunk circle.

Top dressing

Thuja is recommended to be fed twice a season - in March and in August. Spring feeding usually consists of complex fertilizers of prolonged action.

If the tree did not tolerate winter, you can use drugs like Kornevin. In the summer, Phytosporin is often used, which not only nourishes the plant, but also creates a prevention of fungal diseases.

Mulching and loosening

Since the root system is located close to the surface, loosening of the soil should not be deep (7-8 cm). The earth is loosened after watering, weeding at the same time. To simplify care, mulching of the trunk circle (peat, sawdust, needles, bark) helps.

Sanitary pruning and shaping is carried out in late May or early June. First of all, remove damaged and dry twigs, shoots with signs of disease. A shaping haircut is done to thin out the crown and give it the desired shape.

Winter preparations

Despite the frost resistance of thuja, young trees still need shelter for the winter (from snow, wind, sunburn).

The trunk circle is mulched with a thick peat layer (15-20 cm), and the crown is wrapped with thick paper, burlap or just ribbons. Snowballs from twigs need to be regularly cleaned or special frames installed over the thujas.

Thuja will decorate any landscape

This thujka is propagated by cuttings in May. Last year’s branches, 10-12 cm long, break off with a “heel” and immerse the lower end in water, and then in Kornevin. The rooting mixture is prepared from garden soil and peat or sand (2: 1 ratio).

Cuttings are planted in containers or directly in the open ground, picking up a well-lit area with indirect sunlight. Plants are abundantly watered and covered with half a plastic bottle. Watering is done from above, several times a week. You can unpack the young thuja two months after planting.

Diseases and Pests

Tuyka can be affected by shute and late blight.

Prevention is the timely drainage of the soil and proper nutrition. In addition, plants can be sprayed with Bordeaux fluid.

At the first signs of the disease, copper-containing drugs are added to it.

Of pests, thuja aphids and false shields threaten the tree. For control, washing with a soap solution and treatment with insecticides are used. In acidic soils, a wireworm can be established that harms the roots of the thuja. Remedies containing diazinon help to get rid of it.

In landscape design

Thanks to the original color, thujas Sankist are often used in landscape design. It creates a bright sunny accent among the green spaces, in harmony with herbaceous plants and other conifers. It is planted individually, in group compositions or as part of hedges.

The dense crown is well suited for shearing and giving the tree a wide variety of shapes. But even without formation or with minimal pruning, it grows with beautiful conical outlines.

This culture is often grown in rock gardens, city parks, private decorative gardens, used for container planting on terraces, balconies, roofs.

Plant reviews

According to the description of gardeners, Tuyka successfully survives and is very undemanding to care for. She tolerates frosts and rarely gets sick.

Many note the need for winter trimming of young trees or other protection, otherwise the snow damages the crown.

It is noted that conifer loves sprinkling very much and responds well to top dressing - root and extra root.
