Thuja western Kolumna - perfect hedge

To make the garden fence beautiful, the living wall of coniferous plants is ideal for these purposes. The thuja Kolumna, bred in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century, looks best. She perfectly adapted to our climate: she is not afraid of Russian winters, does not fade under the summer sun and keeps her shape without a regular haircut.

Thuja western Kolumna - perfect hedge

Culture Description

There are 5 types of arborvitae, of which Western Russia has become widespread, as the most winter-hardy, unpretentious, elegant and original plant.

Grade characteristics

Thuja occidentalis Columna (Thuja occidentalis) belongs to the group of colon-shaped varieties with an average growth rate: over the course of a year, the thuja grows 15–20 cm high and 5–7 cm wide.

The maximum height is 10 m in a single landing and 8-9 m in a group. The plant forms a tall narrow column with a diameter of not more than 1.5 m.

The crown is smooth, dark green in color, consists of horizontal short skeletal branches, the ends of which end with fan-shaped sprouting shoots with soft shiny needles. With decreasing temperature, it bronzes, in spring the color changes to green.

Due to the structural features, the surface of Kolumna looks like a uniform dense mass.

The bark is rough, red-brown. The root system is superficial, fibrous. The variety is frost-resistant, unpretentious, suitable for the formation of green walls and hedges that do not require a haircut.

To thuja Kolumna showed itself in all its glory, she needs to provide comfortable conditions. These primarily include:

  • landing place;
  • priming;
  • size and quality of the landing pit.

A place for Kolumna is chosen sunny or in lace partial shade. A dense shadow will lead to loss of decorative properties of the thuja, its crown will become loose and dull.

It is better to choose the soil light, air and moisture permeable. Optimal - loam without a close groundwater approach.

The plant is undemanding to soil nutrition, but soil acidity is critical for it: it must be slightly acidic or neutral.

The site is prepared in advance, for which:

  • dig up, removing weed roots;
  • seasoned with compost, slow-acting mineral fertilizers (superphosphate, AVA station wagon, granular);
  • if necessary, deoxidized by adding dolomite flour or chalk.

Possible spring plantings (April-May) and autumn (4 weeks before the onset of constant frost).

Saplings with closed roots can be planted at any time, including in the summer.

A landing pit for seedlings 1.5 m high is needed with a depth of 70-80 cm and a width 2 times larger than the root system.

Instruction manual

The seedling must be prepared for planting

When planting a seedling with an open root system, you must:

  • inspect each root and remove damaged ones;
  • treat the roots in phytosporin or a pink solution of potassium permanganate;
  • soak for 20 minutes in a root-forming product (Epin, Kornevin).

Tui with a closed root system should be removed from the container, soak an earthen lump for 20-30 minutes in a rooting agent solution.

At the bottom of the pit, a drainage layer of 15-20 cm thick is poured, consisting of expanded clay, broken brick or river pebbles. For filling, the composition is prepared:

  • 2 parts of garden land;
  • 1 part peat,
  • 1 part of sand;
  • 1 part of organic matter (rotted manure, mature compost, humus).

Note! When planting, you can not make fresh manure or bird droppings - they will provoke fungal root diseases.

The following actions :

  1. The pit is filled 1⁄2 with planting soil.
  2. Abundantly watered.
  3. Place the seedling so that the root neck is at ground level. If necessary, add additional earth. The roots are evenly distributed over the entire area of the pit.
  4. The soil is neatly compacted.
  5. Watered with water from above in 2-3 doses, as it absorbs moisture. Such watering will remove all the sinuses in the pit.
  6. After complete absorption from above, they are mulched with sawdust, bark, expanded clay.

Important! In group landings, thuja are planted at a distance from each other of at least 1.2-1.5 m.

Attention and care is needed primarily for young plants. They do not survive the bright midday sun, they should be protected from sunburn.

Care consists of standard operations:

  • glaze;
  • weed removal;
  • loosening;
  • top dressing;
  • preparation for winter;
  • sanitary pruning.

Thuja love moist soil, lack of moisture has a bad effect on needles: it becomes lethargic and crumbles. However, prolonged waterlogging of the soil negatively affects the health of the plant.

The column is watered as the surface layer dries, usually 1-2 times a week. But watering should be plentiful, which can moisten to a depth of 10-15 cm. It is there that the bulk of the absorbent roots of the arborvitae are located.

In the heat they use sprinkling. This operation freshens needles, promotes more active evaporation of resinous substances containing volatile.

Weeds are rivals of the plant in the struggle for soil nutrition, so they must be removed.

In parallel, loosening is carried out. Loosen the soil and after irrigation to improve the supply of roots with oxygen and remove the surface crust. The operation should be performed with caution.

You can save time by using mulching. For this, mowed grass, peat, sawdust, bark are suitable.

Top dressing

The first two years after planting, the tree does not need to be fertilized

Thuja cannot tolerate an excess of nitrogen, with its excess decorative qualities are lost: skeletal shoots are stretched out, the trunk is exposed, fan growing branches loosely adjoin each other. The tree looks untidy, ugly, like a broom.

Therefore, thujas give nitrogen fertilizers in a minimal amount, mainly in early spring, when it is necessary to restore needles after winter damage.

In the first 1-2 years, feeding is not necessary - the tree will have enough of the food that was introduced during planting.

Subsequently, special fertilizers are needed for evergreen conifers. There are spring and autumn mixtures that contain a balanced composition of macro- and microelements.

To thuja calmly survived the winter, it is necessary to perform 2 operations:

  • mulch the near-stem circle with leaves, peat and humus (with a layer of 10-15 cm to protect the roots from freezing);
  • tie the crown and cover it with any breathable material to protect it from breaking by snow and spring sunburn.

Kolumna holds her form well. However, she needs spring sanitary pruning. They remove yellow and damaged branches. This variety needs a shaping haircut only to limit growth or when performing a design plan.

Diseases and Pests

It is easier to prevent thuja diseases than to treat them.

Important! The ban on fresh manure, bird droppings and undecomposed compost reduces the likelihood of fungal diseases, and regular clearing of weeds protects against pests.

For prevention, plants are treated with Bordeaux fluid.

In case of blight, blight, rust, shute, the affected branches should be removed and burned and the thawed and trunk circle treated with fungicides (HOM, foundationazole).

When attacking pests, insecticides are used: Fufanfon, Fumitoks Antiklesh, Decis, Actellik, Aktara.

To increase immunity and relieve stress, the tree needs to be supported with a Zircon solution.

The table shows that it is cheaper and faster to create a hedge of thuja Brabant. However, if you need tall plants with a dense crown, which do not need to be regularly cut, it is better to choose a thawed Kolumna.

In the top 20 western thuja, Kolumna takes 5th place, and Brabant - second. The thuja Smaragd is the leader in this rating - the most popular variety in the middle lane.

Landscape design

Narrow tall trees of Kolumna resemble Tuscan cypress, so they are planted to give the site a Mediterranean style.

In group plantings, this variety is most often used to highlight areas within the site, to design a living wall in the entrance group.

It also looks good in the form of a solitary plant.

In the foreground, crops are planted that have the same soil and lighting requirements. Excellent compositions are obtained if next to a thuja plant:

  • Forsythia European;
  • hydrangeas;
  • roses;
  • hosts
  • primrose
  • Badges;
  • heather.

Against the background of a dark green crown, bright green Smaragd or yellow arborvitae will look great.

In natural markets, prices are much lower, but the risk of acquiring a diseased plant there is much higher.

Gardeners reviews

Tui are now perhaps the most popular plants in Russian dachas. Gardeners like their long season of decorativeness, endurance to haircuts for any figure.

Owners of country houses note a significant improvement in the air composition in the plots and a decrease in blood-sucking insect colonies after planting.

Young mothers with babies are calm in the gardens with hedges from Kolumna: her soft needles do not scratch the baby, and at the same time serve as a reliable border for the play area.

Florists engaged in landscape design are happy to use thuja in their compositions: thanks to its slow growth, the plan has not been violated for a long time.

Summer vacationers say that culture requires a minimum of effort. This is especially true for shaping haircuts.

The only thing owners do not like is the requirement to bind the crown and cover the plants for the winter. For large landings, this is a significant effort. However, with the achievement of the age of 4-5 years, the need for these operations disappears.

Thuja Kolumna is an easy-to-care, beautiful and affordable evergreen coniferous tree. With its help, any site can be turned into a stylish and protected from prying eyes garden. And volatile, secreted by this tall tree, freshen the air around the house and scare away annoying insects.
