Propagation of hydrangea by cuttings

Hydrangeas are beautiful ornamental plants. There are different types of this flower, depending on what they can be grown in the house or on the street. It is possible to grow it yourself, for this, in the autumn, panicle hydrangea is propagated by cuttings. The method allows you to save all the characteristics inherent in this type.

Propagation of hydrangea by cuttings

The choice of cuttings

In order for the plant to take root, it is important to choose the shoot from which the part will be cut. From the strong branches that grow upward, weak seedlings are obtained. It is better to choose side shoots that do not grow too actively.

If one long branch is used for propagation by cuttings and cut into several parts, it is important which one the cuttings will be taken from. The parts from the lower part of the stem take root faster.

Hydrangea propagation methods

Hydrangea is propagated in the fall by cuttings both in amateur gardening and on an industrial scale.

There are several effective ways to do this, the most popular being breeding in the ground and in water.

First you need to prepare such materials:

  • earth of loose structure;
  • vermiculitis;
  • containers for landing;
  • clean water room temperature;
  • sharp secateurs or clippers;
  • different types of drainage;
  • vitamins to stimulate rooting.

Propagation by cuttings in the soil

For this planting option, plant cuttings that have already bloomed are taken.

You need to dig up the shoots and clean them from the ground. Next, secateurs or scissors cut off all dry and damaged processes.

It is important that at least 5 flower buds remain on the shoot. Then the top is separated. The best cut size for planting is 13-16 cm. You can not take branches from unhealthy plants. After cutting, the material for planting is left in a solution of antibacterial agents and fungicides.

Breeding in water

This method is more complex, it requires certain gardening skills.

Even with minor violations of the rules of agricultural technology, planting material can rot and deteriorate.

First, panicle hydrangea cuttings are prepared and all foliage is cut from them. The length of one is from 12 to 18 cm. Part of the plant above the last leaf bud is also cut off.

The flower must be prepared for cuttings

Further it is necessary:

  1. Place the cuttings in a dish with water at room temperature. You can add vitamins to it.
  2. Land in a container of clear glass. So more light will come in and the roots will begin to develop faster.
  3. Water needs to be changed daily to prevent decay. When the roots appear at least 2 cm, the plant is ready for planting.

Propagation by cuttings from the bush

This is one of the most affordable ways. It is suitable for a young and strong bush. Choose one branch of medium length, it is gently bent so that it touches the ground. A small hole is preliminarily prepared and a vitamin substrate is poured into it, the depth should be 10-15 cm.

Then you will need:

  • lower a branch into it, sprinkle with soil and cover with a film;
  • press with a brick or other heavy object;
  • water so that the soil is always moist.

After 1.5-2 weeks, the film is removed and look at the state of the root. If it is not formed enough, reinforce the pressing with an additional brick and leave for another week.

When the root system is formed in panicle hydrangea, the cuttings are cut from the bush and planted in a new place. When digging a seedling, it is important not to damage the lump.

Room breeding

This option is suitable to cut the plant in the fall in indoor conditions. Seedlings root in a vase with a special substrate. First, a mixture of sand and nutrient soil is prepared in a 1: 1 ratio. This mixture is poured into a container for planting and watered abundantly with water.

Cuttings are cut at a height of not more than 15 cm. The cut points should be 6 cm above and below the extreme leaf bud. Next, cut off all the foliage to stimulate root growth.

How to propagate:

  1. Put in a solution to stimulate growth. It is better to use a ready-made store composition and leave the seedlings in it for a day.
  2. Pits are prepared in the soil and the soil is compacted around them. The depth of the hole should be at least 5 cm.
  3. Slices are inserted into the wells and sprinkled with earth. Top with a jar or make a small greenhouse from the film.

Watered as necessary, guided by the soil (it should always be moist). Air temperature - not lower than 17 ℃, the best option is 20-25 ℃.

After 3 weeks, check the status of the root system. Gently lift the stalk up. If there is resistance, the roots are formed correctly in the right amount. The plant is ready for planting in a permanent place.

Hydrangea is a flower that is grown both at home and outdoors. It can be propagated independently by the method of cuttings.

There are several ways to breed panicle hydrangea. Best of all - from the mother bush, in the water and indoor. Subject to the rules of planting and care, autumn propagation will be successful and the root will quickly form.
