Heavy Kholmogorsk Geese

Kholmogorsk geese are a heavy meat breed that appeared as a result of folk selection. The birthplace of birds is Russia. The first information about them dates from the second half of the XIX century. Presumably the ancestors of the birds were Chinese and Arzamas individuals. According to some signs, it can be assumed that geese crossed with wild and Tula representatives. The breed has not lost its popularity, as it is unpretentious in maintenance, the birds quickly gain weight, are well adapted to cold climates.

Breed description

As already mentioned, the gross-hillside geese belong to the heavy type. This significantly affected their external data, the birds are massive, with a muscular body and magnificent plumage. Here is a brief description of the Kholmogorsk geese breed:

  • The head is mediocre, the beak is long or shortened, with a developed wallet.
  • The neck is elongated, plump.
  • The breast is expanded and convex.
  • The body is massive, with well-developed muscles, standing horizontally.
  • The back is elongated, straight.
  • There are two fat folds on the tummy.
  • Feet of medium height.

  • By color, Kholmogorsk geese are gray, white or gray-piebald.

The Kholmogorsk breed of geese has 2 lines. The first is represented by large birds with an elongated beak, on which a hump is clearly visible. Feathers on wings often sag. These signs indicate that the blood of the Tula geese flows in the veins of the first line.

The second line is Kholmogorsk geese with a dark shortened beak and a bump at its base. The cone begins to grow at 5-6 months and reaches its largest size by 3 years (puberty of the breed). Its height can be up to 2 cm. It is believed that the second line was formed from the crossing of gray geese with Chinese.

Productivity and breed advantages

The Kholmogorsk breed of geese is very productive. During its breeding, the heaviest representatives were selected, as a result, the average mass of birds can compete with the world's best-known meat breeds. Kholmogorsky goose has a weight of up to 12 kg, goose - up to 8 kg. Goslings at 9 weeks can weigh 4-4.5 kg. The meat of these birds is juicy, tender and tasty, with one carcass you can get 1-2 kg of fat.

The egg productivity of these birds is low; the Kholmogory adult goose carries about 30 testicles per year. Goose eggs weigh 180-200 g. Another notable feature of the Kholmogory geese is their long lifespan. If on average this species of birds lives 7-8 years, then the representatives of the Kholmogorsk breed are 14-17 years old. Puberty comes late, closer to three years. At this age, about 80% of the eggs are fertilized, goslings have good health and a high survival rate.

The advantages of the Kholmogorsk geese breed include the following:

  • young growth is fast growing and gaining mass;
  • high weight in adult birds;
  • disease resistance;
  • birds retain high productivity under any conditions;
  • unpretentiousness in feeding;
  • ease of care;
  • excellent adaptation to cold climates;
  • the ability to be kept on pastures;
  • meat, fat, fluff and feather of high quality;
  • developed maternal instinct in females.

They have Kholmogorsk geese and their shortcomings. The disadvantages of the breed include:

  • late puberty;
  • a small number of eggs;
  • need for a reservoir;
  • heavy weight of geese, because of which they can crush eggs in the masonry.

There are not so many shortcomings in the breed, therefore it is popular. This species is bred not only in private farms, but also on industrial farms. Birds are constantly receiving positive feedback from poultry farmers.

Bird keeping

The breed of Kholmogorsk geese is perfectly adapted to the cold climate. Its representatives can live in the winter even in an unheated house. It is important that the room is dry, clean, and there are no drafts. You can adapt an existing barn to a bird house or build a new one. It is best to make a house for the hillocks of wood, carefully legislating all the cracks and protecting against the penetration of predatory animals.

The area of the room is calculated so that 1 square meter per adult. m. Bird cages can be kept more heaped. Be sure to make an aviary for walking with an area of 5-6 square meters. m on one head. Kholmogorsk geese can graze perfectly all summer on pastures. It is advisable to have a pond nearby. If this is not the case, you need to arrange a small pool in the yard.

There must be a litter on the floor of the house. It is best made from peat or straw. Moss, sawdust and sand are eaten by geese, which is why they often have disorders of the digestive tract. Change the litter as it becomes dirty, removing the upper wet layer. You can raise the floor by 15-20 cm by equipping the bottom of the pallet, then liquid secretions will drain down, they are used to fertilize the garden.

In the house, you need to make feeders and drinking bowls. Wooden containers are placed for dry food, and metal containers for water and wet mixes. You also need to make nests for geese. Their diameter is about 50 cm, their depth is 10-15 cm. It is good to separate the parent tribe in the house or paddock so that the birds do not mix with each other. You can examine in more detail how the Kholmogorsk geese are contained in photos and videos.

Feeding geese

Feeding Kholmogorsk geese is not difficult. In the summer, they can graze all day in the pasture, eating about 2 kg of grass. At this time of year, you can feed the birds 2 times a day, mainly grain or animal feed. In the summer, root vegetables and vegetables (zucchini, pumpkin, beetroot, cabbage leaves, tops, etc.) are added to the diet.

With intensive fattening of the hills and in winter, the diet should include (for one individual):

  • grain and legumes (mainly peas) - 130-160 g;
  • hay from legumes - 100-150 g;
  • root crops (carrots, potatoes, beets) - 300-500 g;
  • sauerkraut - 50-100 g.

Grain is best steamed: so geese eat it better. Wet mixers can add kitchen waste, but only fresh ones. On average, about 700-800 g of feed is consumed per adult per day. In a separate container, it is necessary to pour crushed shells, chalk or gravel to improve the digestion of food and replenish minerals in the body. From the second half of winter, geese are given premix and other vitamin supplements to increase egg production.

Breeding geese

Puberty in geese of the Kholmogorsk breed occurs quite late, at 3 years. Maximum productivity is 4-5 years from birth. The number of eggs is also low, but it is offset by a high fertilization rate and good chick survival. Testicular incubation can be natural or artificial.

When breeding Kholmogorsk geese, one must adhere to the following rules:

  • The parent herd of hillocks is formed at the rate of 1 gander for 4 females.
  • The goose nest is prepared in advance, given that the laying begins in February.
  • An incubation egg is stored at a temperature of 13 ° C for no more than 15 days.
  • Before placing eggs under the female, ovoscopy is performed.
  • Young females are tested for how faithfully they sit on the nest and whether they leave it in the presence of a person.

Goslings hatch from eggs in 29-30 days after the incubation has begun. In the first week they should be kept warm at a temperature of 28-30 ° C, then it is gradually reduced. Goslings are fed in the first days with steamed, chopped peas, barley, oats, millet mixed with cottage cheese, a boiled egg and greens. From the third day they add vegetables, corn.

Already at the end of the first week, goslings can go outside. After 14 days, they are already walking all day. At approximately 8 days old, the chicks are sorted. Stronger goslings - applicants for the formation of the parent herd, weak go to fattening. The next selection is carried out in 8-9 weeks, determine the average weight of the herd, the best gander and geese are left on the tribe.

Already at 9 weeks old Kholmogorsk geese can be sent for slaughter. By that time, goslings weigh an average of 4 kg, further feeding is not too cost-effective. If the birds did not go to the meat on time, they will have to keep up to 120-130 days. At 2.5-3 months, molting begins, the meat becomes more rigid, the weight gain is negligible.

The characteristic of Kholmogorsk geese suggests that birds are very promising. It is profitable to grow them both for yourself and for business. You can buy ready-made seven-day goslings or breed yourself, in an incubator and under a brood hen.

How much are the little chicks? The price of goslings aged 7 days is approximately 200-300 rubles. Before buying, it is worthwhile to carefully consider how the Kholmogorsk goslings look in the photo, read the description of the birds.
