Description of the roan suit

The roan suit of horses is one of the most popular. It is very rare and far from all breeds. Presenting a roan of a roan suit was previously considered a manifestation of the highest degree of recognition and respect for a person.

Roan suit of horses

Uniqueness of the species

The roan is found only in horses that have the Rn gene in DNA. It plays a major role in shaping the shade. The gene is inherited and completely determines which color will dominate the mare or horse.

The roan suit of horses does not welcome the crossing of two horses of this color. Experts strongly recommend avoiding such experiments, as the two dominant genes begin to fight among themselves.

How does this happen? Mother and father of the roan suit are carriers of the dominant gene, which by its nature takes precedence over others. But in the case of crossing roan horses, genes cannot find those that they can suppress. After conception, 50% of roan embryos die in the womb, the remaining 50% die a few days after birth. The survival rate is very small. Only a few cases are known when the babies survived.

The roan horses are a unique and elegant combination of white hairs and the main color shade. For this reason, horses have a lot of color variations. A white tint is present on the hairs of the abdomen of the animal, as well as on the neck. A still white shade is found on the head and legs, but in very rare cases. This feature can be seen in the photo.

Special signs

The main feature is that the animal always has dark hair. Also, the eyes of the steed always retain a dark shade, regardless of the dominant color. There are rare cases when the eye color is lighter: bright brown or orange.

Hair of this species never turns gray, the color of the braid becomes more saturated and deep.

Special signs of a roan and suit

Depending on the time of year, the equine body changes color. The coat may either darken or lighten slightly. As experts note, braids, tail, head, regardless of the time of year, do not change color. Very rarely, the appearance of the so-called "apples" on the breasts of animals.

Hair growing in the place of a former wound has a transparent shade, but never white. In this case, any cuts or scars are almost invisible.

Most often, the roan color of mares is found in animals that have wild horse DNA in their genus. For example, roan is characteristic of the following breeds:

  • Bashkir horses;
  • heavy horses.

The roan suit suggests that the horse is strong, hardy, with well-built genetics. The stallion will be a great mating mate.

Pity is not respected in all manifestations: if it is noticeable in the Shire breed that a stallion or mare was born with a small admixture of white hairs, the animals are rejected.

Colors

Such animals come in completely different colors.

This applies even to such types of horses as:

  • gray;
  • gray
  • piebald;
  • Savras
  • Chubar.

Further on the photo you can see how rich the color scheme of this species is.

Bay roan

This is the most common species found in a large number of breeds that have retained the Rn gene in their DNA. He can “sleep” and “wake up” after one or several generations.

Bay roan horse

The main feature of roan is that white spots appear on the background of the dominant bay color. Against the general background, the main part of the body has darker shades of brown, and the braid, legs and tail are always only dark.

With a touch of red

Red-fiery is also considered a very common color. Its main feature is that against the general background of red color there are white spots that appear rather pink-gray-white. The head and legs maintain the intensity of the primary color.

Roan red horse

Unlike the front legs, the hind legs are always covered with strong vegetation of predominantly white color. Sometimes there may be cases when small spots are visible on them. In percentage terms, this is only 3% of 100%.

Black color

Today, individuals of this color are born a couple of times a year. Prankiness can manifest itself after several generations.

Black roan color

Black and white hair on the horse's body mixes, giving the steed a smoky blue-white hue, which is especially noticeable during running. This gives the animal a special charm.

Salt color

This color is also quite rare. Often, the color is called salted with gray, due to the fact that gray hairs stand out against the general background. The main color is a dark chestnut.

Chestnut roan

Savras-roan

This color is more common in horses, in the creation of DNA of which forest or steppe species took part. “Wild” patterns like dark stripes or spots are visible on their body.

Savras roan horse

In the photo you can see how beautiful this color looks and how much it stands out among all the others.

So, the roan suit is a special color of the horse's hairline, which is characterized by the inclusion of white hairs in the dominant color. So distinguish between red, crow, savras and roan horses, as well as bay and brackish.

Crow-roan color is the most popular - horse breeders in each country are looking for such representatives to replenish the collection.
