Description of the horses of the Kabardian breed

The horse has long been used by man for many needs. These animals acted as labor in agriculture or as a means of transportation on the ground. There are several varieties of horses, the differences between which depend on the scope of their use. Some types of horses are good for sports races, some are suitable for the agricultural industry or dressage. The latter include the Kabardian breed of horses. These stallions are distinguished by a special constitution of the body, thanks to which they are indispensable in the mountains and still compete with technology.

Characteristics of horses of the Kabardian breed

History of occurrence

About the Kabardian breed of horses was known several hundred years ago. However, the use of horses for military purposes almost led the breed to extinction.

For a long time, this type of horses did not have clearly established standards. The Kabardian horse breed began its official history in 1870. At this time, the Malkinsky stud farm was opened for breeding. In 1930, the Malokarachevsky plant created several tribal lines. In particular, the Karachaevskaya breed of horses was bred, which is erroneously ranked among the Kabardins.

In the modern world, Kabardinians are actively used in Asia Minor for cattle grazing or in border patrols. Some lines also participate in sporting events. At short distances, the Kabardian horse does not show good results, but is the undisputed leader in long-distance races. Kabarda use these horses for mountaineering, as a circled stallion of this species is very calm about strangers. Kabardian horse is often found in the photo of tourist booklets of the Caucasus.

Stallion Exterior

The appearance of the Kabardian breed of horses has distinctive features. There are such signs of the breed:

  1. Growth reaches 155 cm, and weight - 400 kg.
  2. The body of the animal is massive, the back is straight and ends with a strong croup.
  3. The neck is curved and short.
  4. The head is medium in size, the muzzle is embossed, with a characteristic convex profile and developed nostrils.
  5. The legs have pronounced joints, the hind limbs are saber-shaped.
  6. The hooves are tall and steady.
  7. The average life span of a horse is 35 years.

The unusual structure of the limbs allows this breed to easily make mountain dressings. In addition, the Kabardian breed of horses is often used for long-distance races. Due to the constitution of the body, these stallions can overtake sleek riding horses at great distances. A photo of this animal is often found in horse breeding atlases as an example of a balanced breed.

Appearance of the Kabardian breed

A characteristic suit for the breed is black, red and karakova. Variegated individuals also occur, but they try to prevent them from divorcing and consider them to be a marriage.

Kabardian breed is also divided into 3 lines:

  1. Eastern type. These horses were bred for long-distance riding.
  2. Thick or massive type. The stallions of this line are characterized by a powerful hull and good traction. They are used in rural work.
  3. The main type. Horses of this species combine all the characteristic features of a massive and eastern type.

Breed character

In many ways, the behavior of the Kabardian horse depends on the line of the breed. So, for the eastern type, such traits as rebellion and waywardness are characteristic, and the massive appearance of the stallions is characterized by calm and endurance.

In the Caucasus, horse riding practice is still used. In the early years, stallions are kept in the herd and lead a semi-wild lifestyle. This tempers their character and increases stamina. By the third year, the stallions begin to go round. Initially, horses are not inclined to trust a person and can be aggressive. However, after several dressings, the Kabardian obeys the rider and becomes obedient. Caucasian peoples use horses in hostilities, so the trust between the rider and the horse should be absolute.

Horse character

Kabardian is appreciated for such qualities:

  1. Fidelity. Horses become so attached to their owners that they can become ill if the rider changes.
  2. Courage. The horses of this breed are resistant to loud noises and dangerous situations. Kabardinians are not afraid of shots and can calmly take the burning barrier.
  3. Caution. Stallions carefully choose mountain trails, thereby ensuring safety for both themselves and the rider.

In other countries, this breed is not kept in such strict conditions, but many character traits persist even after several generations. Photos of Kabardian horses can be found in foreign publications, because due to its nature the horse is popular at the border service.

Conditions of detention

Many stud farms and private farmers still use the herd method of keeping Kabardian horses.

Under such conditions, stallions grow more seasoned and are able to seek food for themselves. In addition, the cubs are milk fed for a long time, which makes them healthier and stronger. In some villages in the Caucasus, they begin to keep Kabardians in the stable on an ongoing basis only after they have traveled around. This usually happens in 2-3 years of a horse’s life.

Nowadays, on pastures mainly tribal horses are kept, and workers and sports individuals are housed indoors. The Kabardian breed of horses does not require special living conditions. The tributary of one individual should be 4 square meters. m, the floor of the stall is covered with a layer of sawdust or straw. If the horse is used for border service, they do not install lighting in the stable: such horses are better oriented on the terrain at night.

Among the sanitary norms of detention, one can distinguish the following:

  1. There should be no drafts, pungent odors or loud noises in the stable.
  2. Litter changes once a day.
  3. The level of temperature and humidity in the room must be stable regardless of the season.
  4. Once a week, the stable should be cleaned completely.
  5. When changing seasons, the room must be disinfected with special means.

A mandatory requirement for keeping Kabardians at home is pasture for grazing. This breed cannot be constantly in the stall. Stallions do not tolerate the lack of physical activity. For the proper development of muscle tissue, horses should be provided with mountain walks.

Every six months, the entire herd should be examined by a veterinarian. Kabardian horses undergo compulsory vaccination.

Animal ration

The daily nutrition of Kabardians depends on the conditions of detention. If horse breeders use the herd method of raising horses, then most of the food the animals get themselves on pastures.

Such stallions are sometimes fed vegetables and legumes to replenish the supply of vitamins. Also, horses who feed on grazing can be given millet straw and oats.

If the animal spends most of the time in the stable, then the diet of the Kabardian horse should be balanced. Stall content allows you to grow larger stallions, however, the main characteristics of the breed are lost.

The daily nutrition of the Kabardian horse, which is kept in the stable, should include the following products:

  1. Meadow and clover hay - 60% of all types of feed.
  2. Fresh vegetables - 30% of all types of feed.
  3. Concentrates - 10% of all types of feed.
  4. Vitamin and mineral supplements - according to the weight of the horse.

Kabardian breed horse feed

For better assimilation of crops, the feed is crushed and mixed with straw cutting before use. Finely chopped wheat or rye straw increases saliva production, making it easier for horses to chew food. Before giving vegetables to Kabardians, they should be thoroughly washed and cut into large pieces. To increase the productivity of milk, nursing mares can include boiled potatoes and beets in the diet.

The amount of food consumed by a stallion of the Kabardian breed depends on physical activity. If a horse is used as a labor force or in competitions for long runs, its diet should look like this:

  1. Forced hay - 50% of all types of feed.
  2. Juicy food - 10% of the daily diet.
  3. Concentrates - 40% of all types of feed.
  4. Vitamin and mineral supplements depending on the proportions of the horse.

Among other things, you need to monitor the quality of the products. Mold, dry hay, or parasite-spoiled vegetables can lead to serious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Particular attention should be paid to vitamin supplements. Kabardian horses are often used in long races, so the bone and muscle tissue of the horses should be well developed. To do this, in the feeding of stallions give such natural components:

  • bone and grass meal;
  • fish fat;
  • cake.

The stallion of this breed consumes a lot of water - the animal’s drinker should contain 50 liters of liquid. Dehydration is deadly for horses: in the absence of water for a long time, the stallion may die or remain disabled.
