Description of the breed Italian geese

Recently, Italian geese have begun to gain popularity. The geese of the Italian breed were bred by breeding at the beginning of the 20th century on the Apennine Peninsula. To do this, they crossed the Chinese duck with local representatives. The experience was a success, and very soon, tourists admiring the features of the Italian geese were able to get individuals in their household.

Italian geese

As a result, Italian geese spread throughout the world, their high adaptability to climatic conditions only contributed to this. Today it is easy to find white Italian geese even in remote poultry farms. The characteristic of Italian geese is so good that farmers give birth to such individuals as in a private house or on an agricultural farm.

Before you get geese of the Italian White breed, you should study their description and read reviews.

Appearance and behavior of birds

In general, the geese of the Italian White breed differ from their relatives only in a few characteristics. The description claims that the distinctive features are snow-white plumage, unusually strong orange legs and a fairly short beak. Also, the Italian does not have a "wallet" and cones on his head. His body is slightly elongated, his neck is thick, and his eyes are blue or gray. A female crest is characteristic of females. The mass of mature males is about 7 kg, and females up to 6 kg.

This breed is considered productive, graceful, active and agile.

The individuals are distinguished by a calm temperament, although at times they are aggressive towards other birds - especially annoying roosters can suffer from geese, which, due to their larger sizes, can even cripple them.

Italians easily make contact with people, dispense with conflicts. If there are no instigators in the team, the birds do not enter into a fight and behave calmly.

The increasing popularity of these birds is easily explained by their many advantages, among which:

  • Rapid ripening. The female is ready for offspring at the age of 8 months. From it, you can get 2 egg laying a year.
  • Egg performance. One clutch on average consists of 45 eggs. Each egg is medium in size, weighs about 165 g. From one goose per year, you can get about 90 eggs.
  • High survival rate of young animals. 70-80% of goslings from each masonry survive. Females of Italian geese have a particularly developed maternal instinct and take good care of their offspring, so there is no need to use incubators or brood hens.
  • The taste of meat. Meat obtained as a result of crossing Italian geese with representatives of other breeds is especially valued. If you reduce the female to a selected large gander of a different breed, you can get excellent offspring.
  • Down and feathers are white, used in the textile industry and art.
  • Adaptability and undemanding care.
  • Duration of profitable period up to 5 years.

Farmers say that all costs for Italian geese are fully justified. The main thing is to approach bird care wisely and follow basic rules.

Italian geese adapt well to different climatic conditions. They were bred in the hot Italian climate, but tolerate the cold of the northern countries. There are several rules for caring for these birds.

  • For Italian geese, the cleanliness of the premises where they are kept is vital. Keep dry and regularly remove droppings. You should also disinfect and fight parasites about once every six months, change litter and perches. It is recommended to use sawdust as flooring in the house, and in the cold season - an insulated version with peat. Do not forget to ventilate the crawler and walk winged in warm weather.
  • Birds should be fed often and satisfyingly, providing them with all the necessary vitamins and minerals. In addition to berries and plants that geese eat during grazing in a meadow or pasture, the diet includes various feeds, cereals, animal proteins, calcium-rich foods (chalk, shells), and vegetables.
  • The water in the drinker should be as clean as possible, preferably flowing, so that the infection is not transmitted to the entire herd.
  • Geese love to swim, so it makes sense to build a swimming pool for them.

Mating is carried out in several ways. Often farmers practice natural mating, but there are situations when breeders need to get a particular breed and mix the individuals they need, then resort to forced.

It is best to use natural reproduction, because the individuals who choose each other, the children grow faster and get stronger.

In natural mating, individuals live together in the same area. During the period of sexual hunting, males and females gradually look at each other. Only when reciprocity appears between the birds, do the couples retire for breeding.

With self-selection, one should pay attention to females and males of approximately similar composition: too thin or thick individuals will not give the desired offspring. Sometimes mating does not occur at all: the goose does not want to breed with such a female, sometimes it even shows aggression.

In general, the breeding of the Italian goose breed is a simple matter, it does not require compliance with any mandatory conditions, as is the case with other birds.

The main thing is to observe cleanliness in the room and the sequence in the care of birds.

There are 3 females per goose. For them, a special section with three sockets is equipped in the room. In the house, there should be enough space for all individuals, so you should build a house of the appropriate size. Such breed behaves calmly during mating, provides proper care for future offspring.

After birth, the chicks grow very quickly and rapidly gain weight. By the 9th week of life, they reach 3-4 kg, their meat is of excellent quality. The costs of Italian geese are fully justified by the quality of the final product.

Protection against common diseases

To prevent birds from being exposed to common diseases, you must follow all the rules for care and feeding. In geese, who are given high-quality and balanced food, they remain stable immunity to common diseases.

Unhygienic conditions are a taboo for the house, and therefore, they clean the room 1-2 times a week with cleaning products. Drinking bowls and feeders are recommended to be washed daily. If garbage got into the water, it must be replaced with fresh, otherwise individuals will catch a viral disease.

After acquiring a new individual, it is quarantined. The bird is kept in a separate room for about 10-30 days, during which time all possible diseases will appear. If the bird is healthy, after quarantine it is released and kept together with the rest of the livestock.

The veterinarian should show the birds at least 1 time in 6-12 months. Preventive examinations should be carried out on a regular basis, then the possibility of getting sick is significantly reduced.

Useful Tips

To select quality individuals, it is advisable to purchase them from trusted breeders. Conscientious breeders try to carefully select geese for sale. They are also engaged in breeding and feeding with all responsibility. Qualified sellers always have documents for the bird. If you buy individuals in the bird market or with your hands, there is a chance of running into scammers.

Some poultry farmers may sell a bird with a disease, so during the purchase it is important to look at the condition of the goose: the winged one should not be lethargic or tousled. A healthy bird is always active and friendly.

When building a house, it is important to consider that geese do not like noise. It is recommended to build a bird house in the distance from highways and houses of neighbors. There must be a lawn near the house so that in summer the geese have a place to graze.

In the barn itself, it is necessary to install ventilation so that the room is always ventilated. If you take into account such features and properly maintain geese, you can easily grow a healthy and strong livestock.

In the end, it becomes clear that the Italian goose representative is an excellent choice, because its productivity indicator is very high: from these individuals you can get both excellent meat and a fairly large number of eggs and good feathers.
