Clematis care rules in the fall
The condition of blooming creeper in the next spring-summer garden season depends on how the clematis care will be properly organized in the fall. Pre-winter preparation covers a number of necessary measures to create a perennial plant comfortable conditions for the cold season.
Clematis care rules in the fall
Clematis pruning for the winter
Regardless of the time of clematis planting, autumn plant care involves pruning. This is done to prepare him for the winter.
Stems should be no more than 0.3 m in height, and up to 3 active buds were present on each remaining trimmed shoot. Pruning in the fall makes it possible to lay the subsequent growth of side shoots.
When leaving clematis during the fall, in the process of preparing a perennial plant for wintering, choose the appropriate time for pruning. It would be better if it was a rainy day, from late October to early November.
The best time for pruning a flowering perennial is a period of 2-3 weeks before the expected onset of the first autumn frosts. During this time, clematis have time to recover and gain strength for the upcoming wintering.
Cut off for such purposes:
- during pruning, perennial growth rate and flowering are improved;
- for sanitary cleaning of vines from damaged and dried branches and removal of buds remaining after flowering;
- for better adaptation to the coming winter;
- this procedure rejuvenates the plant and provides the appearance of fresh shoots in the next season.
Those perennial clematis, in which buds appear on last year's shoots, are pruned at a height of up to 1.2 m, leaving the strongest stems on which flowers will appear in the next garden season. Their shoots are cut by a third, which have already faded in the current season.
Almost completely cut clematis, which is covered with flowers only on fresh shoots. Such varieties retain only 2 active buds on the stems, of which the main flowering processes will appear in the next garden season.
Feeding and watering
Autumn care for clematis is not complete without watering and top dressing.
If the fall season is dry, you need to water 2 times. However, if the season was rainy, you should not water it at all.
Fertilizer complexes are last introduced at the beginning of autumn care, before winter pruning. This time usually falls on the first week of September, in the southern regions it is extended until the beginning of October.
Flowers need fertilizer
The strengthening nutritional supplement replenishes the mineral reserve lost in the perennial plant in the root system and stems. An exception to the number of fertilizer complexes used for the winter feeding of clematis are those that contain nitrogen, as this element leads to an intensive buildup of green mass, which is not necessary before preparing for winter.
When leaving clematis in the fall, it should be fertilized with mineral fertilizers containing phosphorus and calcium. Additionally, up to 10 kg of humus is poured under each bush.
Protection and shelter for the winter
According to the rules for leaving clematis in the fall, they are to be sheltered for the winter season, especially young seedlings, which after planting have not yet developed resistance to low temperatures.
Shelter in several stages:
- pruned shoots are initially sprinkled with dried soil, where it is permissible to add humus or peat mass, such additives create additional heat for the root system of the vine;
- then they cover it with natural material that ensures the passage of air masses so that the roots of the vines do not soprel and begin to rot, spruce branches, sawdust, peat, river sand are suitable as covering organics, the layer thickness is at least 15 cm.
Frost-resistant varieties are left on the supports for the winter, mulching the trunk circle. Less stable varieties should be looked after more carefully. They are removed from the supports and laid on soil, covering from above with a layer of organic matter and from above with any covering material. To scare away rodents, a cloth moistened with creole or a bait with poison is put in sawdust and peat mass.
Before buying and planting, it’s worthwhile to clarify how to care for in autumn when preparing for wintering: what type of frost resistance does it belong to and how to cover it for the winter.
Before sheltering the plants for the winter in the open ground, its root area is sprayed in the fall from harmful insects, pathogenic bacteria and fungal spores. As processing preparations, solutions with iron sulfate with a concentration of 2% and Bordeaux liquid with a concentration of 1% are suitable. For the treatment of perennial flowering creepers, it is permissible to use insecticides before hiding for wintering.
Planting and caring for clematis in the fall involve pruning, watering, mineral top dressing and mandatory shelter for the winter season. Observing these winter care measures. You can save the plant in the cold season, providing it with further development and flowering.
