Characteristics of Prekos sheep

Prekos sheep first appeared in France. In a similar way, this breed was called for a reason: Prekos is translated from French as “precocity”. Already from this we can conclude that the breed of Prekos sheep early enough becomes suitable for breeding. Species Prekos grown for meat and wool.

Description of Prekos breed sheep

Prekos sheep are animals with a good body structure and strong physique. The brood of this species is quite fleshy and has strong immunity.

  1. The legs are massive and wide, the back is also very wide, and the prekos is perfectly flat, which is a hallmark of the breed.
  2. The color scheme of this species does not have a large number of variations, most often there is sand and crystal-white color, there may also be a mixed sand and white, and as a result the sheep turns dirty white.
  3. Oddly enough, but the head and legs of Prekos are completely devoid of hair. They are not completely naked, you can see small growths of wool, but they perform the function of protecting against minor damage when the sheep is on a walk.

A large percentage of animals actually belong to the species of hornless, and only 20% of the entire corral will belong to the type of horn (those who have horns). Of course, the main difference from all other species varieties is that Prekos belongs to precocious breeds: individuals grow very quickly, gain weight, and mature for breeding. Experts say that females of this species give birth to several cubs at once. Typically, sheep have one fruit each, and 15% of the lambs do not survive until the 5th day after their birth.

Prekos are known almost all over the world not only because it is a very fleshy breed, but also because they can produce very high-quality wool, from which almost any woolen product can then be made. The structure of the runes is very homogeneous, the curls of wool have a rather large thickness - 1 cm. The total weight of the wool for male representatives of this species is 7-9 kg, and for females - 8-9 kg. The average percentage of the male’s neck is 7-9.5 kg, and in females - 4-5 kg.

Prekos sheep wool

Today, farmers have calculated the total yield of fiber per sheep, it is 45-50%, or about 2.5-2.9 kg of wool. According to experts, the thickness of the wool is in the range from 25.1 to 40 microns, and the quality of the fiber is from 44 to 58 units. The fleece itself has a staple and braid structure.

Breed maturity

Due to the fact that Prekos belongs to early species of sheep, even at 4 months of age, with good feeding and proper care, the weight of the animal can reach 27-31 kg. Farmers are advised to send animals for slaughter at the age of 8-9 months. This allows you to simultaneously get a good slaughter, and tasty and soft meat. At this age, the weight of one animal can be 20 kg.

Prekos is a species of sheep that is not difficult to breed. The average fertility per one herd (100 sheep) is 120-145%. This is one of the best results. But even with such indicators, many breeders still try to improve the characteristics of this breed, especially their fecundity. So far they have not been able to achieve the desired result.

Content and breeding

If young sheep were kept in good conditions, always received normal nutrition and supplements in the form of vitamins, they were looked after, then at the age of 1.5 they can compete with adults.

The full development of the sheep occurs at the age of 2.5-3 years. Sheep with good care and a balanced diet can maintain their fertility up to 8-9 years. Sheep, for the first time, become sexually mature at the age of 3-4 years. Also, one should not forget about good nutrition and constant care. Sheep intended for mating with females should be more than 10 hours a day on the street: this positively affects the results of mating.

Mating can occur at any time of the year.

Mating in this breed occurs at any time of the year. All thanks to the constant activity of individuals that regularly keeps the uterus in good shape. If one of the future parents is ill, mating should be postponed urgently, since nothing good will come of it: as a result, the fetus or the mother herself may die. If the weather is always good in the places where the sheep are kept, they can be walked at least round the clock, the main thing is to monitor the behavior and what they eat. There are a large number of poisonous herbs that can lead to the death of a sheep.

For this type of sheep, grazing is a very important stage of keeping. They need to walk at least a couple of hours a day so that they themselves can replenish the balance of vitamins and nutrients. Prekos in winter should be kept only in corrals and constantly give hay and any dry herbs. You can buy them for the winter or prepare them yourself and leave them until the cold season. In cold weather, the shelter where the sheep will live should be heated, the temperature below 5 ° C the animals will not be able to endure and will simply die.

Where can I meet this kind

Most often, this type of sheep is grown in Russia and Ukraine. The breed is grown at Kharkov enterprises (Ukraine). In addition, it is very popular in Germany, France and Italy. Today, breeders are working on improving its characteristics.

Prekos is a meat and wool breed that does not require special efforts for growing and keeping. The main thing is to keep animals in a warm place and provide them with constant access to hay. The characteristics of the breed of Prekos sheep are very different from those characteristic of other species, especially the fact that sheep are born kilogram. The detailed description proposed above will help draw appropriate conclusions and determine the feasibility of breeding.
